Police in Owasso, Oklahoma say 43-year-old hairstylist and TikTok creator Sara Gilson, also known as Sara Duffey, was shot and killed in her home by her estranged husband, 48-year-old Jeremiah “Shawn” Duffey, on the night of July 23. Officers arrived after a frantic 911 call where a dispatcher heard a woman screaming and then what sounded like a gunshot. When police entered the home, they found both Sara and Duffey dead from gunshot wounds in what investigators describe as an apparent murder-suicide.

Less than two weeks earlier, Sara had used a trending “Netflix documentary” TikTok format to accuse her soon-to-be ex-husband of being a pedophile, saying she had just learned of his alleged behavior with a minor. That short video spread quickly and was picked up by multiple outlets. According to later summaries, she claimed Duffey had engaged in inappropriate contact with a child connected to a basketball team he helped coach, though no criminal case was brought before his death.

Protective Orders, Prior Warnings, and a System That Moved Too Slowly

Long before the gunshots, there were warnings on paper. Court records reported by local and national outlets show Sara had obtained a protective order against Duffey just one month before the killing, and she had previously sought a similar order against him in 2021. Police and reporters say that on the night of the shooting, Duffey violated that active order when he came to the home, a violation that ended with Sara dead and Duffey reportedly turning the gun on himself. No prosecutor will ever test the child-abuse claims now that the accused is dead.

One child in the home saw at least part of the attack, according to police summaries. A neighbor told reporters that a child ran to her door for help after the shooting, and that 911 was called from there once the boy said his stepfather had shot his mother. In another account, officials said a child inside the home called 911 as the attack unfolded and was heard by the dispatcher sobbing and screaming. That child and at least one other were not physically harmed, but they now face life with both parents gone and a home turned crime scene.
