Twitter Held In Contempt Of Court For Resisting Search Warrant And Gag Order

(TargetDailyNews.com) – The Biden administration’s Department of Justice has fined Twitter for trying to fight a search warrant filed by Special Counsel Jack Smith, court documents have revealed.

The search warrant is part of the federal investigations currently underway against former President Donald Trump and was intended to give the Department of Justice access to his Twitter account.

Twitter’s chief objection to the warrant was the gag order attached to it, which would have prevented the social media giant from notifying the former president that federal authorities now had access to his account, which would also include his private direct messages.

Twitter delayed the handing over of the Twitter account by three days after the search warrant was issued, which resulted in the judge holding the company in contempt of court and handing down a $350,000 fine. After the fine, the social media company complied with the search warrant and gag order.

The former president’s social media presence came to an abrupt end shortly after the January 6 Capitol riots, as various mainstream social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram promptly suspended his accounts on the charge that he incited violence. After Elon Musk purchased Twitter (now known simply as X) in October 2022, Trump’s account was eventually reinstated, proclaiming a restoration of free speech on the platform. However, Trump has chosen not to return to Twitter, preferring his own social media platform, TRUTH Social.

The news comes as Special Counsel Jack Smith continues to lead the charge in trying to convict former President Trump on various criminal charges. With two federal indictments looming over Trump’s head, he is charged with more than 37 felony charges related to the mishandling and retention of federally classified documents in his Mar-a-Lago, Florida residence, as well as being accused of conspiring with Mar-a-Lago staffers to delete security footage.

Additionally, Trump is also charged in another indictment revolving around his alleged role in the January 6th Capitol riots.
