( – Former President Donald Trump lashed out at Biden Department of Justice (DOJ) Special Counsel Jack Smith, insisting that the security tapes at his Florida Mar-a-Lago residence were properly handed over to federal investigators.

Trump took to his social media platform, TRUTH Social, saying that the tapes were willingly handed over to “the thugs,” and also called Smith “deranged” in the statement.

The controversy revolves around new charges that were added to the DOJ’s criminal indictment of the former president, which initially saw 37 felony charges relating to Trump’s alleged mishandling of classified documents. A superseding indictment made on Thursday, July 27, alleges that Trump asked for security tapes at Mar-a-Lago to be deleted. Specifically, federal prosecutors have accused the former president of collaborating with his valet, Walt Nauta, and Carlos de Olivera, a property manager at Mar-a-Lago, in an effort to hide the tapes after a subpoena was issued for them.

The former president has since denied this, further stating on TRUTH Social that such an allegation is misconduct and “Prosecutorial fiction,” as well as election interference. One of Trump’s attorneys, Alina Habba, also denied the allegations, saying that he willingly turned over the tapes and cooperated with federal authorities.

The superseding indictment also slaps an additional charge of willfully retaining national defense information, another classified document allegation.

The Trump campaign issued an official statement on the matter, saying that the new charges were simply the latest scheme by the “Biden Crime Family” to “harass” the former president.

The news comes as Trump continues to dominate the 2024 Republican Party nomination, with him garnering over half of the would-be presidential nomination vote. His strongest primary opponent, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, has steadily declined to a meager 18.3%. The former president’s ongoing legal problems appear only to be strengthening him among Republicans, many of whom believe he is being unfairly prosecuted in an effort to keep him from running again in the 2024 election.
