(TargetDailyNews.com) – On Tuesday, April 2nd, Wisconsin and three other states held their primaries. Unsurprisingly, both former President Donald Trump and incumbent President Joe Biden, the only remaining candidates in the presidential election from the major parties, easily won. However, despite Trump’s victory, results from Wisconsin spell out some trouble for the presumptive Republican nominee.
Wisconsin is an important swing state in the upcoming presidential election. In the 2016 election, Trump defeated Hillary Clinton in Wisconsin by less than 1% margin. However, in the 2020 election, Biden defeated Trump by a similar, but slightly larger, margin.
In Tuesday’s primary, Trump garnered 476,355 votes, or 79.2% of Republican votes, earning him 41 delegates. Former Governor of South Carolina Nikki Haley, who dropped out of the race after Super Tuesday in early March, won 76,752 votes, which was almost 13% of the Republican votes cast. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis earned 20,112 votes, or 3.3% of the Republican vote. Finally, the “uninstructed” choice, which means voters do not feel any available candidate represents their personal values, earned 12,922 votes, which represents over 2% of Republican voters in the state.
Many commentators, especially those critical of Trump, have pointed out that losing 20% of the vote in an essentially uncontested race spells trouble for the Trump campaign. Bill Kristol, a conservative who remains vehemently opposed to Trump, pointed out that Biden defeated Trump by less than 20,000 votes in 2020, while Haley, who dropped out of the race a month ago, earned 76,000 votes against Trump.
Despite winning the state, the Biden campaign should be concerned about his results in Wisconsin as well, given that 46,680 Democratic voters chose the “uninstructed” option. That represents 9% of Wisconsin Democratic voters, which could be a problem for Biden in November. Reports indicate that one of the top reasons why Democrats chose that over Biden is due to his handling of the war in Gaza, though many voters have reported concerns about Biden’s age and mental acuity as well.
