(TargetDailyNews.com) – Both the Republican National Committee (RNC) and Donald Trump’s campaign have filed suit against Michigan governor Gretchen Whitmer, accusing her and other state officials of illegally using government office locations for voter registration stations.
Specifically, the plaintiffs are unhappy that Whitmer and Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson have designated Small Business Administration and Veterans Affairs locations as spots for voters to register. They claim that state law gives the power to designate voter registration locations solely to the legislature; in other words, they claim Whitmer and Benson acted outside the authority of their offices.
The suit seems likely to be motivated by the widespread view among Republicans that the U.S. electoral system has serious flaws and vulnerabilities. Though the mainstream media almost unanimously claims there is “no evidence” of fraud or manipulation, many believe this to be a claim that the mainstream media only make because Donald Trump believes otherwise.
It’s anyone’s guess which way Michigan voters will turn in this year’s presidential election. Donald Trump won the state in 2016, but Joe Biden carried it in 2020. Both campaigns are likely to fight hard, seeing the state as up for grabs.
The Trump campaign’s suit against Whitmer does indeed assert that there are issues of vote integrity in Michigan. The complaint states that Whitmer and Benson violated state law on its face by designating SBA and Veteran’s Affairs locations as voter registration locations when they do not have the statutory authority to do so. The suit also claims that Michigan officials are “sowing confusion” among voters about whether state agencies are following voter registration laws properly.
The lawsuit asks for a ruling declaring the move was illegal as well as a “permanent injunction barring the State Defendants from designating any VRAs without express authorization from the Michigan Legislature.”
