(TargetDailyNews.com) – Tammy Murphy (D) suspended her bid for the Senate on Sunday, March 24th amid claims that she doesn’t want to run a negative campaign and felt like it was important to unify the party ahead of this year’s general election. Murphy is the wife of NJ Gov. Phil Murphy and had been vying for the Senate to replace Sen. Bob Menendez (D-NJ) who is currently indicted on federal corruption charges.
Menendez’s home was raided in 2022 amid allegations he was taking bribes from Egypt in exchange for favorable policy votes. He was previously the chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee which put him in a position of additional authority. The feds found gold bars, huge cash stockpiles, expensive jewelry, fur coats, and other luxury items. Menendez was asked to resign but has refused to do so. He even suggested he may run for reelection in November as an Independent. He was removed from his position as committee chairman due to a rule about indicted members being unable to hold leadership positions.
Rep. Andy Kim (D-NJ) was vying for the seat along with Mrs. Murphy. Some critiqued Murphy’s bid as a bit of obvious nepotism, considering her marriage to the governor. Gov. Murphy asked Menendez to step down last September. Mrs. Murphy was able to garner multiple endorsements within days of her announcement of seeking to replace Menendez, likely via her husband’s political connections.
Mrs. Murphy focused her ire at former President Donald Trump, suggesting that she was intent “on reelecting President Biden,” as well as a Democrat victory down the ballot in her home state.
Menendez had previously been tried on corruption allegations which ended in a mistrial in 2017. In the new indictment, FBI officials claim they found nearly half a million dollars in cash hidden in his New Jersey residence. They also seized over $100,000 in gold bars. The feds also claim Menendez’s wife’s Mercedes-Benz was paid for by the bribers, Wael Hana and Jose Uribe, who are co-defendants in the case.
Prosecutors allege Menendez had secretly aided the government of Egypt by giving them “sensitive U.S. Government information” in exchange for gifts and cash. The scandalous allegations are detailed here.
