Special Elections Restore Democrat Majority in Michigan House

(TargetDailyNews.com) – Following a special election on Tuesday, April 16th for two seats in the Michigan House of Representatives, Democrats have retaken control of the full state Legislature.

Democrats in the state previously had complete control over the state government in 2023 but lost their advantage when two Democratic members of the House – Lori Stone and Kevin Coleman – left their positions to become mayors of suburbs outside Detroit. Their departure left the Michigan House with an even 54-54 split between Democrats and Republicans, requiring any bill to have bipartisan support to pass.

Before Stone and Coleman’s departures, Michigan Democrats used their majority to pass several left-wing policies, including strengthening abortion rights, creating new gun control laws, adding protections for LGBT people, and changing laws enacted by Republicans that Democrats claimed weakened labor unions.

Nearly half a year later, two Democrats won the special elections triggered by the previous Democrats’ departure, allowing them to regain control of the state government. While Republicans had hoped to win a seat, it was considered a long shot, as both districts are within Detroit, a Democratic stronghold for many years.

The special election winners were Mai Xiong, who was born in a refugee camp in Thailand before immigrating to the U.S. as a child and previously served on the Macomb County Board of Commissioners; and Peter Herzberg, who has a finance background and has served as a City Council member in his hometown of Westland, Michigan since 2016. Both Herzberg and Xiong won their races with at least 60% of the vote.

As it was a special election, both Xiong and Herzberg are only serving partial terms that end on January 1st, 2025, so to maintain the Democratic stronghold on the Michigan legislature, they will need to win another election in November.

In addition to regaining their 56-54 advantage in the Michigan House, Democrats also control the Michigan Senate. Gretchen Whitmer, the governor of Michigan, is also a Democrat.
