San Francisco Family Struck by SUV

(TargetDailyNews.com) – Three members of a family were killed after an SUV slammed into the bus stop they were standing at in San Francisco while attempting to visit the zoo on Saturday, March 16th.

The family of four, whose last name has not been reported, were celebrating the parents’ wedding anniversary by taking a bus to the zoo. The father, Diego, and the mother, Matilde, had their two sons with them, a one-and-a-half-year-old as well as a two-month-old infant. The father and the toddler died at the scene. The mother was taken to the hospital where she later died of her injuries. The infant remains hospitalized in critical condition. Three others were injured at the scene but are expected to survive.

The driver of the white Mercedes SUV was identified as 78-year-old Mary Fong Lau. Though she was taken to the hospital after the crash, reports indicate that she was in stable condition when she reached the hospital. According to jail records, Lau was booked on Sunday afternoon on a variety of charges, including reckless driving, reckless driving with bodily injury, driving at an unsafe speed, driving the wrong way on a divided road, and vehicular manslaughter.

Some witnesses to the crash told authorities that they believed Lau was suffering from “some kind of medical condition” when she crashed into the bus shelter, though police have not confirmed these reports. Witnesses also report that the SUV was going “between 50 and 70 miles per hour” on Ulloa Street, driving in the wrong direction. They further reported that they saw “no signs” that the driver tried to brake, and no skid marks were seen on the road after the crash.

Brooke Jenkins, the San Francisco District Attorney, released a statement Monday morning, offering condolences to those who knew the victims and reporting that the family has asked for privacy. Jenkins added that she understands the “immediate desire” to know what will happen to the driver, and she asked for patience while her office gathers more information.

A memorial for the family has been set up at the scene of the accident, and a vigil was held Monday evening.
