(TargetDailyNews.com) – Independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. recently revealed that he had a parasitic worm infection in his brain. The campaign said that doctors believed the infection was acquired over a decade ago and highlighted that these kinds of infections are far more common than previously believed.
Dr. Celine Grounder told media on Thursday, May 9th that parasitic brain infections involving tapeworms are very common in the third world and are the most frequent cause of seizure conditions in places where clean water isn’t readily accessible.
Grounder explained that the infection originates when microscopic eggs get onto the hands of individuals and then end up in their food. The eggs hatch in the digestive tract and the nascent worms can travel around the body and settle in various tissues, including the brain.
Kennedy’s representatives highlighted that the most likely explanation for his condition was that he picked up the worms during environmental campaigning in Asia, Africa, and South America.
RFK previously suggested that the worms ate some of his brains and the damage may have caused cognitive issues. Grounder elaborated, explaining that the worms don’t actually ingest brain tissue. They absorb nutrients in the blood and grow, which causes them to occupy limited space, triggering impingement of nerves or inflammation; both of which can cause symptoms.
Grounder speculated that Kennedy had a pork-related tapeworm which can be treated with anti-parasitic medications. The body will then calcify the worm’s remains, leaving a cyst behind, presuming it isn’t absorbed and cleared, or there isn’t a complication requiring surgical removal.
She said that the worms can trigger headaches, seizures, nausea, and vomiting, but that many people infected by the worms don’t actually experience symptoms.
Kennedy said that he didn’t require medical treatment for his infection in conversations with the press. Kennedy has been hovering steadily around 10% nationally in the polls and his campaign has indicated he’s intent on running on all 50 state ballots. His presence in the election could alter the outcome, depending on which major party he pulls more votes from.
