McConnell Booed At GOP Convention

(TargetDailyNews.com) – The Republican National Committee (RNC) Convention in Milwaukee this year will be one for the record books. Just two days after surviving an assassination attempt at a rally in Pennsylvania, Donald Trump was officially nominated to wild cheers in the auditorium.

Mitch McConnell, on the other hand, got a different kind of welcome. The Senate Minority Leader was just starting to announce that his state of Kentucky had picked Trump to endorse when a chorus of boos and jeers broke out. There were a few who cheered McConnell, who has verbally sparred with Trump before, but they were in the minority.

McConnell’s announcement was pro forma; Trump won all 46 Republican delegates from Kentucky as expected.

The biggest disagreement between McConnell and Trump had to do with the riots at the Capitol on January 6, 2021. McConnell said he thought Trump was to blame for inciting a “mob” of protesters, and said the 45th president had told lies about the election in 2020.

In response, Trump has lambasted McConnell’s wife, Elaine Chao, who was Trump’s transportation secretary during his term.

Trump supporters have lost no love for McConnell, the longest-serving Senate Minority Leader. And like President Biden, McConnell’s age has caught up with him. Long before Americans became used to seeing Joe Biden display signs of senility on camera, tongues were wagging about Mitch McConnell’s repeated episodes of freezing for up to 30 seconds while on camera delivering remarks. Earlier this year, McConnell announced that he would retire from his leadership position in November.

Regardless of what Republican convention attendees may think of McConnell, he and Trump have mended fences at least enough to be on speaking terms for the first time since the end of 2020. In June, they had a private discussion that McConnell called “really positive.” At the same time, McConnell reminded the press that even though he disapproved of Trump’s actions around January 6, he would support any Republican nominee when the time came. He made good on this promise during the RNC convention.
