Man Dead After Helicopter Crash

(TargetDailyNews.com) – A father and daughter were aboard a helicopter that crashed in a Miami canal December 27th, and sadly, only the daughter survived.

Frantic 911 calls demonstrate the distress in witnesses who saw the aircraft spiral into the water that Wednesday. One caller told dispatchers “it’s a pilot and his daughter,” and relayed that the daughter was able to swim away from the wreck, but she was panicked that she could not find her father.

Clement Zanzuri, 71, a Miami business-owner, was piloting the Hughes 369 helicopter, taking his daughter, 27-year-old Jordan Zanzuri, along for the ride. The aircraft departed from Fort Myers and may have been en route to the Miami-Dade Executive Airport when the crash occurred. The chopper went down in a canal about three miles to the west of the airport, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.

Footage from local news helicopters depicted first responders from the Miami-Dade Fire Rescue converging on the scene. The downed copter was completely submerged. Jordan Zanzuri emerged from the water just moments after the crash.

Miami-Dade detective Alvaro Zabaleta said witnesses described the helicopter “spinning and falling” before it crashed into the canal. One witness, Vivian Alvarez, told local media the aircraft was “flying very low,” which was her first clue that it may have been about to plummet into the waterway.

Rescue divers did find the pilot, Jordan’s father Clement, and rushed him to a hospital, but he did not survive. It is unclear from media reports whether Clement Zanzuri died in the crash or later at the hospital.

Local resident Barbara Delgado, owner of the Miami Dance Project, told media that Clement Zanzuri had been her landlord for years. Zanzuri was a “revered businessman and advocate for the arts,” she said, who had left “a profound legacy in our community.”

Jordan Zanzuri was reportedly in the hospital in stable condition at the time of this writing.

Both the National Transportation Safety Board and the FAA are investigating the cause of the crash.
