Israeli Minister Suspended for Controversial Suggestion

( – Despite Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu taking what most would consider to be an extremely hawkish approach to the ongoing conflict in his country, many would argue that he knows better than to publicly advocate for the use of nuclear weapons. Most would likely agree that international diplomacy is typically hindered when one country starts threatening to nuke another.

As such, Israel’s head of state has chosen to indefinitely suspend one of his cabinet ministers for doing just that. Within a few hours of Amichai Eliyahu telling Israel’s Radio Kol Berama that the employment of a nuclear bomb was “one of” a handful of “possibilities” that could play out in the Gaza Strip, the heritage minister was at least temporarily relieved of duty.

Eliyahu’s November 5th statements on airwaves in the Jewish State were quickly lambasted by Prime Minister Netanyahu. Israel’s top official took to X (formerly Twitter) shortly thereafter and said that his words were completely “detached from reality.”

The Prime Minister’s post claimed that the Israel Defense Forces “are operating in accordance with the highest standards of international law to avoid harming innocents” and would continue to do so “until [Israel’s] victory.”

Netanyahu’s post further noted that the minister in question was not on the Jewish State’s emergency war cabinet that was created in the hours after the attacks of October 7th. In the wake of those attacks, 10,000 Palestinians have reportedly been killed.

As is the case in much of the world, Israel is home to differing ideologies on the right, in the center, and on the left. Eliyahu is said to be in the ranks of what some have referred to as a far-right political party known as Otzma Yhudit. The party’s leader is Prime Minister Netanyahu’s current national security minister.
