Florida’s GOP Landscape Shifts

(TargetDailyNews.com) – In its ongoing effort to boost Donald Trump in the GOP primary, Politico once again took aim at Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, this time suggesting that the popular governor is “losing his clout” in the state.

As proof that DeSantis isn’t as powerful as he once was in Florida, Politico went to their go-to list of anonymous Florida political consultants and lobbyists who are always eager to criticize the popular Republican governor since he rarely, if ever, does what they want.

Unsurprisingly, these people on the sidelines claim that DeSantis’ supposed struggling presidential campaign has “eroded” his influence in the state and suggest that it is only a matter of time before the Florida GOP begins to distance themselves from DeSantis.

One anonymous Republican consultant told Politico that there is an impression that those who work for the governor have lost confidence in his presidential campaign and are waiting for him to drop out of the race.

Last week, Republican State Rep Daniel Perez urged GOP lawmakers to move more cautiously in the future. And while Perez insisted that this was not intended as a message to Governor DeSantis, one unnamed lobbyist told Politico that Perez’s words are a sign that the time when the Florida legislature passes everything DeSantis wants may be coming to an end.

Another anonymous lobbyist told Politico that Republicans in the legislature were “faking” their support for DeSantis and have been waiting to see the governor “drained of all his power.”

Politico also cited a recent CNBC interview with billionaire Republican donor Ken Griffin in which he said he planned to remain on the sidelines in the 2024 primary as proof that DeSantis’ support is waning.

At the same time, Republican State Rep. Alex Andrade, one of the few people who did not speak to Politico anonymously, argued that DeSantis still enjoys strong support among the Republican legislature.

Andrade suggested that it isn’t surprising that some in politics are “fair-weather actors.”

Paul Renner, the Speaker of the State House also defended Governor DeSantis, telling Politico that the governor just had the “session of the century,” adding that failing to have a “perfect record is not a sign of collapsing strength.”
