Fauci Says DeSantis Is the Reason He Has Security

(TargetDailyNews.com) – Former NIAID director Dr. Anthony Fauci claimed last week that comments by his critics, including Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, are the reason he has to have a security detail, The Hill reported.

While appearing on MSNBC with host Mehdi Hasan last Thursday, Dr. Fauci responded to a clip of Governor DeSantis joking last year that someone should “grab that little elf and chuck him across the Potomac.”

Hasan asked Dr. Fauci if he took the joke as a threat and suggested that the Florida governor incited violence against the former White House COVID advisor.

Fauci claimed that his public opposition to then-President Donald Trump “triggered” negativity for him among the “far right.” He claimed that he had to publicly disagree with the president, despite it being “uncomfortable” and “painful,” so he could maintain his “professional integrity.”

He claimed that comments like the joke by Governor DeSantis caused actual violence against him and said those comments are the reason he is protected by security.

Fauci conceded that he doesn’t believe that Governor DeSantis “personally” wants to hurt him, but claimed that the governor’s criticisms of him trigger bad people who do want to hurt him.

“That’s the problem,” Fauci added.

The 2024 Republican presidential candidate has made his opposition to the Trump and Biden administrations’ pandemic response a central part of his campaign, often defending his decision to keep Florida businesses and schools open by saying that the state chose “freedom over Fauci-ism.”

Both in his campaign and as governor of Florida, DeSantis has criticized Trump for surrendering his authority to Dr. Fauci and has been a vocal opponent of closing schools, as well as vaccine and mask mandates.

For his part, Dr. Fauci has routinely criticized the Florida governor for opposing masks and keeping schools open.
