(TargetDailyNews.com) – Embattled media giant CNN has announced a fresh wave of layoffs totaling around 100 workers. CEO Mark Thompson explained the layoffs, suggesting that the reorganization was due to shifting operations to be more competitive in the new digital news market.
CNN has been coping with a severe shortage of viewers on its regular cable news channel, recently achieving the astounding failure of having its lowest viewership in over thirty years. Given the changes in population and access to media, that’s saying something.
Thompson said that the process of updating “a great news organization” isn’t something that can be accomplished in a single day in a memo. He said the restructuring was critical and required that roughly 3% of CNN employees be let go.
Thompson has been attempting to go the subscription service route with the company, but a lack of widespread interest resulted in a pathetic flop of CNN+ in 2022 after the company merged with Discovery and WarnerMedia. He also wanted to combine the U.S. television, digital, and international news working groups into a single entity to avoid wasting resources.
Thompson also highlighted the potential of artificial intelligence (AI) to aid in the dispersal of breaking news as well as an expansion of its Hong Kong office.
CNN has been slammed in the press over its repeated promotion of President Joe Biden and his campaign’s claims the man isn’t experiencing age-related mental decline. Recently, CNN reporter Hadas Gold acknowledged that they feared being honest with viewers about Biden’s mental problems over fears it would aid former President Donald Trump’s reelection bid.
Unfortunately, CNN and other media managers failed to realize that people go to the corporate press for accurate and objective information, not a daily dose of leftist propaganda. Distrust in corporate media has reached an all-time high, and with more people getting their information from social media and the internet, competition for attention and views has never been so fierce.
