(TargetDailyNews.com) – Speaker Mike Johnson’s recent trip to appear alongside former President Donald Trump on Tuesday, May 14th at his New York campaign finance violation trial may have cost him political capital with the opposition party. Johnson was recently saved by Democrats after Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) put forward an attempt to oust him. The motion was tabled after a large bipartisan coalition voted it down.
Now some Democrats are rethinking their votes after Johnson publicly defended Trump. At the time, some had suggested the vote was a one-off to make sure additional Ukrainian war funding was passed. Lawmakers suggested their votes could change in the future with criticism that Johnson was “inserting himself” into criminal proceedings.
Johnson reiterated many of Trump’s points regarding the trial, some of which Trump’s been legally gagged from speaking publicly by NY Democrat-aligned Judge Juan Merchan. Johnson said that the trial was a ruse to keep Trump from campaigning, adding that everyone could see it during an interview with the press the following day.
Rep. Annie Kuster (D-NH) suggested that Democrat “patience” might “wear thin” if he keeps throwing proverbial monkey wrenches into their political lawfare. Kuster added that former Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) similarly said mean things about the Democrats before he was kicked out of office.
Rep. Becca Balint (D-VT) suggested that any future motions to save Johnson might not have her support.
Rep. Angie Craig (D-MN) differed slightly, suggesting that the point of the vote to save Johnson was to keep “extremists” from controlling the GOP. She added that as long as he maintains a willingness to compromise she will too.
Rep. Jared Moskowitz (D-FL) said Johnson had no choice in the matter as his political career depends on Trump’s ongoing endorsement. He added that if Trump wanted Johnson gone, he’d only have to say the word.
Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD) suggested that every choice the Democrats make is to “minimize the damage” done by Trump and the MAGA faction of the Republican party.
