Data Breach Impacts Almost Every Resident Of Maine

(TargetDailyNews.com) – The Hill reports that over 1.3 million residents of Maine were exposed during a data breach earlier this year. A cyberattack in May 2023 targeted the file transfer software MOVEit, which is commonly used by federal and state authorities. They accessed and released the dates of birth, government IDs, and social security numbers of the victims. A Russian ransomware operation was blamed for the breach.

State officials wrote that the criminals in question promised to erase the personal data of individuals and claimed they were targeting businesses, not individuals. Despite that, officials suggested members of the public potentially impacted by the breach take steps to protect their privacy information.

They offered two years of complimentary identity theft protection and credit monitoring for those impacted. They also reported that each individual has a different level of exposure depending on what information of theirs was accessed. Some individuals may have even had private medical information exposed.

Officials have worked to block internet access for MOVEit software systems and hired additional cybersecurity to beef up their protocols. They’ve also attempted to identify and alert every person whose data was stolen during the breach.

Residents of Maine can reach out to discover what information of theirs was breached by calling Maine’s dedicated call center at (877) 618-3659.

They encouraged residents to check their credit history and monitor reports for any suspicious activity. They also said suspected identity theft could be reported to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) or law enforcement, including the Attorney General’s office.

Postmeds, Inc. also announced a massive data breach impacting 2.4 million of its customers who receive prescription medication by mail. They were hit between August 30th and September 1st, 2023, according to investigators. Information released included names and medications they receive, some also had their prescribing physician or demographic information exposed.
