Biden’s Swipe at Justice Thomas’ Lifestyle

( – In a New Yorker interview, President Joe Biden made digs at Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, implying that Thomas lived a life of luxury.

The insult came as a result of Biden’s conversation with writer Evan Osnos, who queried the President about same-sex marriage, abortion, the overturning of Roe v. Wade, and access to contraception. The New Yorker’s Osnos asked Biden if he thought the conservative Supreme Court would overturn the 2015 Supreme Court ruling legalizing same-sex marriage using the same legal reasoning SCOTUS used to overturn Roe v. Wade.

Justice Clarence Thomas discussed that possibility when he wrote a concurring opinion on the case that overturned Roe v. Wade in the Dobbs v. Jackson case in 2022.

Biden said he did not believe the full Supreme Court would take this step, but he said he thought a few sitting justices would want to. He said “a couple on the court” would go much farther than that, and referred to Clarence Thomas as “the guy who likes to spend a lot of time on yachts.”

When the New Yorker writer asked Biden if he were referring to Thomas, Biden “grinned.”

Justice Clarence Thomas has been under scrutiny for alleged ethics violations since a 2023 report from ProPublica put one of his friendships under the spotlight. Thomas is friends with billionaire businessman Harlan Crow, who has taken Thomas on trips to distant countries on Crow’s private jet and yacht. Critics have accused Thomas of violating ethics rules by failing to disclose this, but Thomas has countered by saying the SCOTUS ethics rules did not require justices to disclose what he called “hospitality” from friends.

During the magazine interview, Biden said he wanted to make Roe v. Wade “the law of the land,” which would require Congress to pass federal law mirroring the options that existed before Roe was overturned. The President said he did not fully agree with the idea summed up in the phrase “my body, my choice,” but that placing the decision-making power about abortion with the mother was the best compromise he could think of.
