(TargetDailyNews.com) – At July 11’s NATO summit in Washington, D.C., President Joe Biden signed an agreement with South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol outlining the cooperation on strategy the two nations will take should Communist North Korea launch a nuclear attack.
The agreement states that any such attack will be met with a “swift, overwhelming, and decisive response.”
In a joint statement, the two leaders said they were both reaffirming their obligations under the U.S.-ROK Washington Declaration and affirming that a nuclear strike by North Korea would be immediately and harshly punished. Biden noted that the U.S. deterrence stance is backed up by “the full range of U.S. capabilities,” including the use of America’s nuclear arsenal.
The new agreement adds on to the word of the U.S.-South Korea Nuclear Consultative Group formed last year. The working group aims to coordinate planning and response between the two nations. The U.S. has told South Korea that it will protect that country from nuclear aggression from its northern neighbor by using America’s own nuclear capabilities.
The details and text of the latest agreement are not yet public, but it is being reported that it includes the placement of U.S. nuclear armaments on the Korean peninsula, according to South Korea’s Deputy National Security Advisor Kim Tae-hyo. Speaking to the press in D.C., Kim said this is the first written agreement where the U.S. has committed to using “nuclear assets” to warn off any attempts by North Korea to launch a nuclear attack. He said the alliance between the U.S. and South Korea has traditionally relied on “conventional,” non-nuclear military approaches, but that alliance is now “firmly upgraded in name and reality.”
Anxiety is rising for both nations as Russian President Vladimir Putin has been cozying up to Communist North Korea. The Communist nation’s dictator, Kim Jong-un, is unhappy that South Korea has been supplying Ukraine with arms to defend itself against Russia’s invasion. It appears Putin thinks the time is right to take advantage of that by deepening the relationship with North Korea.
