(TargetDailyNews.com) – Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the progressive Democrat House Rep. from New York, just lost the endorsement of the Democratic Socialists of America.
One of the hardest-left members of the American left, Ocasio-Cortez, apparently could not be left enough to satisfy the socialist organization. The national DSA had given Ocasio-Cortez a “conditional endorsement,” but withdrew its endorsement entirely after a complaint from the New York City chapter. A spokesperson for the national DSA said the New York chapter did not “feel it was strategic” to give the politician a conditional thumbs-up.
Strangely, the same NYC chapter that complained is still endorsing AOC.
The DSA has a stringent list of qualifications candidates must meet in order to secure an endorsement. These include:
- Opposing all funding to Israel (and showing that opposition in public), including the missile defense system known as the “Iron Dome.”
- Publicly state opposition to criminalizing any form of “anti-Zionism.”
- Publicly oppose legislation that uses definitions of antisemitism written by the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance.
- Publicly endorse the so-called “Boycott, Divest, and Sanction” BDS approach that anti-Israel organizations push in order to deprive Israel of economic relations with other countries.
- Show public support for ending the so-called “settler colonialism” that anti-Israel commentators say Israel is engaged in.
The national DSA said several member groups were upset that Ocasio-Cortez was not full-throatedly endorsing “Palestinian liberation,” and an end to what the group provocatively calls the “heinous genocide in Gaza.”
DSA member groups also castigated Ocasio-Cortez for some of the legislation she has supported. They are particularly upset with her “yes” vote on House Resolution 888. They say the bill confuses the concept of antisemitism with opposition to Israel’s “right to exist” (note: the DSA put “right to exist” within quotation marks, signaling their belief that Israel does not have a right to exist).
The issue of anti-zionism seems to really exercise the DSA. Members criticized the New York politician for participating in a public panel with members of the Jewish Council for Public Affairs. DSA critics, again, accused Ocasio-Cortez of “conflat[ing] anti-Zionism with antisemitism.” In plain terms, the DSA wants the ability to represent itself as opposed to the very existence of Israel without being accused of being biased against Jews.
